I can remember growing up and attending middle school. I found out very fast what was cool and what wasn’t, whether it was music, movies or your appearance. If you didn’t have the designer clothing or the Air Jordan basketball shoes you probably weren’t going to cut it in the elite social group that dictated the social setting of the entire school. As a kid of comfort I soon found out that sweat shirts and sweat pants weren’t going to cut it if I wanted to make it in the social big leagues, especially after I was caught wearing a pair of sweatpants backwards.
So I wanted to have friends and be popular just like everyone did at that age. I tried as hard as I could to transform my image even though we shopped on a budget, but I made the clear decision from that point on that I wasn’t going to let my mom pick out my clothing anymore. No matter how hard I tried to become more fashionable or change my image I was still me, a fun loving easy going humorous guy. I don’t think any of my friends at that time ever saw me for the way I dressed or wore my hair.
Think back to when you were about 12 or 13 and what type of attitude you formed, we all went through heartaches and heartbreaks at that age and it shaped many aspects of who we are today. No matter how hard we try to deny it we are still those kids trying to fit in and become part of the social elite in the “adult world.”
Ask yourself this, who have you become, compared to who you were as a kid and how has it shaped your success? Maybe their have been times when you were growing when other people tried to tell you who you should be and what you should do to becomes successful. Think about how that advice or those opinions have changed your own success formula.
Now ask yourself the three magic questions that could change your life.
1. Did the people that you grew up with and maybe influenced you help you?
2. Is your success formula working?
3. Is it time for a change? If so the only person that you have to listen to is yourself!
