At times I have felt like I am just following the leader. Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever gone to work on a Monday morning and noticed that you are doing the same repetitive tasks that you were doing on Friday. Then you notice that your boss or maybe the highest level of the company are walking around doing what seems like whatever they choose and telling others what to do? Then I would wonder how can I get to that level or how can I be in charge? Really you are asking yourself, how can I become a Leader?
To actually become a leader you have to know what a leader is, a leader is a person who inspires, motivates and influences others to maintain group cohesion to accomplish goals and tasks for the greater good of a company or organization.
I have found through a bit of research that there is often some tension towards management in many work environments. The reason for this is a lack of leadership and this lack of leadership can decrease productivity and doom a company for failure. Without a strong leader a company will never have a strong business.
Throughout history social norms have told us not to like your boss and every boss that you ever have will be overbearing and impossible to get along with. Maybe that was true in past generations but today times are changing and the chain of command is becoming stronger.
The very first thing you must do to become a great leader is to set a clear sense of purpose. Let others know what your chief aim and main goal is. Let them know why you want to be their leader. Bring ideas to the table that have never been discussed before.
Second, you must build a good relationship with the people that you are managing and are working for you. If they do not respect you and have confidence in you they will never give their maximum effort in order to help you. As a leader you must have the same faith in your employees as they do you. You must show your employees respect and treat them with courtesy and resolve problems in a professional manner.
Third, communication is one of the most important aspects of any effective leader. If the people that surround you are not informed and do not know the main goals or target objectives you will never build a productive environment. There are many channels that we can use today whether by phone, e-mail or face to face interaction an informed staff is a productive staff.
Fourth, Know that becoming a good leader is not something that will happen overnight, you must work at it and study the main principles of leadership and continue to evolve and become creative with you style and someday you will become a great leader.
