It is that time of year to start making all of your new years resolutions if you have not already ran to your local gym for the one dollar sign up special. Before you start to act on your resolutions it is better to stop and think about what you accomplished the year before and how your life would change if you made a few changes this year.
So take out a pen and pad of paper and write down all of your new years resolutions from last year and if you have to go take a smoke break before you start you are probably not starting out very well. So go ahead and write down all of the things that you accomplished this year and are very proud of. Think back to the time when you accomplished them and how great it made you feel, whether you lost 10 pounds, quit smoking or just spent more time with your family. If you are like me you might have had a tough time remembering your resolutions from last year or really didn’t complete too many. I can sympathize, but it is not time to feel bad about last year because this is a new year and you will have new goals. Did you catch that I said goals! I have stopped referring to the term resolution all together, due to the fact that I just feel that it is more associated with failure than success. How many times have you jokingly said something throughout the year and then said I will make it my new year’s resolution or just sarcastically referred to the whole process. Now call your resolutions goals for 2008.
After you have reviewed your previous goals form 2007 no matter how many it may be (if any) start a new sheet and title it “Goals for 2008”. Now the fun begins, make a very exhaustive list of goals. This list can have very small goals like take out the trash every week or very large goals like increase your income by 30%. Just make a list of everything that you would love to complete in 2008 even if it is a bit outrageous. Just make sure that you have a list with as many goals as you can think of and don’t limit yourself.
After you have made this list study it or share it with a supportive friend or family member that may share the same goals. Continue to study this list and then put the list in order of importance, when I say importance I mean what is most important to you, not what would be important to someone else. If walking you dog everyday is most important that is great, put it at the top and do it. We all are different and we all have things that are most important to us, this is your list no one else’s.
After you have organized the list make as many copies of this list as you can and put one in your office, put one in your car, shrink one down and put it in your wallet. Just have it as many places as you can think of so you will see it all of the time and constantly be reminded of the things that you want to accomplish this year.
The last thing to do is take action with a plan of action. Look at which goal that you want to start working and develop a plan of action that works for you and fits into your schedule, if you only work on this goal 15 minutes a night that is great because that is 15 more minutes a night than you worked on it in 2007.
Make 2008 your year to conquer your goals that you have wanted accomplish for years and do not be afraid because with a bit of organization and dedication you can accomplish anything.
